Garden Diary

June already !

I feel like Rip Van Winkle, I closed my eyes and suddenly Winter
has been overturned by summer. Work has been very demanding
recently with most of March and April spent miles away, the
garden has jumped from bare soil to fresh growth in that nap.

Already leeks, onions, rocket and radish have gone to seed and
the cleared potato patch was overrun with weeds, it took two of
us all day to clear. However enough tomatoes, squash, aubergines
and mangetout have survived the slug onslaught to give me hope.

The sweet corn and Dahlias are another story, munched out of
existence, I have tried coffee grounds, eggshells, sharp sand The
farmers look on bemused when will I just use slug pellets ?

As always the unplanned bits of the garden seem the best with
calfornian poppies self seeding, the drive is awash with gold
leading to the house.
